2003 Cat Report

Great Yarmouth & Gorleston Sailing club hosted a catamaran open meeting over the Bank holiday weekend for Formula 18's and Spitfire's. The event consisted of 6 windward/leeward race's on the Saturday and Sunday for the event trophy followed by a separate handicap long distance race on the Monday.
Seventeen competitors from as far afield as the Isle of Wight were at the start for the first race on Saturday. Conditions were perfect with a mixture of sunshine and a  force four southerly wind coupled with a flood tide. As the racing  progressed the wind increased, as did the height of the waves, the speed of the fleet and the frequency of capsizes! At the end of the day after  three races Jon Worthington and Tom Quayle from Great Yarmouth and Gorleston Sailing Club were leading the Formula 18's in spite of an OCS in the second race. Stuart Gummer and Chris Rashless from Saint Helens Sailing Club finished the day leading the Spitfire's. Sunday dawned with the forecast light variable winds and race officer Dave Houghton did well to sail 2 races before lunch, but had to concede defeat in the afternoon when the first race had to be abandoned after the wind shifted ninety degrees before dying all together. Overall the lead in both classes remained unchanged with Worthington/Quayle winning the Formula 18's with four wins and Gummer/Rashless winning in the Spitfires.
Mondays Long distance race started with a short beat from the committee boat to a mark laid off the Beach Cafe at Gorleston, the fleet then headed offshore on a three sail reach to a Navigation Mark off Lowestoft. Halfway out to the mark a see breeze began to compete with the Offshore wind which saw several changes in positions.  By the time the first boats reached the mark the sea breeze had settled and provided a three sail, twin wire reach to the next Navigation mark off Great Yarmouth. The final leg back inshore to the finish line was another high speed three sail reach.  First to finish in an hour was the Formula 18 of David Hazard and Suzanne Rhodes from Datchet Water Sailing Club, but winners on handicap were Chris Sproat and Georgina Burk from Bognor Regis Sailing Club sailing a spitfire.
