GYGSC - The Club Introduction GYGSC is a small friendly informal club with probably the best sea sailing in Norfolk. We sail at all states of the tide & the race area is located directly off the beach. We always race from a committee boat line around laid marks. Race courses include triangles, windward/leeward, old style Olympic & passage races. We use average lap time handicapping so different speed boats race for the same amount of time. We sail on Sundays & Thursday evenings throughout the summer. We have various social events & run some race training. Class's sailed include, 505, B14, Contender, Finn, Fireball, Formula 18 cat., Javelin, Laser, Laser 4000, Phantom, RS300, RS400, RS500, RS600, RS700 & RS800's
History Great Yarmouth and Gorleston Sailing Club was founded in 1949 and, until 1968 was based at Burgh Castle near Great Yarmouth, with sailing taking place on Breydon Water. The Club then moved to its present position overlooking Gorleston beach, and it is now one of the few clubs in the area to offer open sea racing conditions at all states of the tide. It is primarily a dinghy sailing
club, where active racing members are catered for with a full programme of
events throughout the season. The
seaside location with its extensive sandy beaches also provides a welcome
diversion for children and non-sailing members. The clubhouse, which was extended in
1979 with the aid of a Sports Council grant, offers ample changing room and
shower facilities. Immediately
adjacent to the club site is the fully enclosed dinghy park which, under the
watchful eye of the nearby harbour control office, provides secure storage for
some fifty or so boats. Launching is from a sandy foreshore with a large concrete breakwater providing shelter in all but the most adverse conditions. Racing takes place on Sundays between
April and October over a variety of courses, Windward / Leeward, full
Olympic, Triangle and others on occasions. Thursday evening handicap series
being held between the May and the end of August. See Club Programme for full
details Open meetings are held during the
year. Other features of the full racing programme are the ever-popular
long-distance coastal races. For more information on the club and membership details write to the Secretary.
