2006 Prize Giving

With the conclusion of another season and the overall results determined, members of Great Yarmouth and Gorleston Sailing Club gathered at the annual prize giving dinner.

This results this year show how competitive the racing at the club has become with only a few points separating the top boats and several series seeing a tie for first place and discards being used to decide the overall winners.

The Allcomers 1 Series, sailed around a triangular course, saw a dead heat for first place and was decided on discards in favour of the RS400 of Richard Fryer and Carol Smalls.  Runners-up, in a B14, were Dick Roe and Kate Dulieu. Third place went to the RS400 of Martin Browne and Di Holmes who were only a couple of points ahead of the next two boats

The Allcomers 2 Series, sailed around a windward-leeward course, was another dead heat for first place that was decided on discards.  Overall winners were Martin Browne and Di Holmes in a RS400 and runner-up spot going to Chris Sallis in a Phantom. Third position went to Richard Fryer and Carol Smalls.

Only one point separated the top three boats in the Watling Plate trophy, which is sailed around an Olympic Course.  Richard Fryer and Carol Smalls emerging as winners and Martin Browne and Di Holmes, runners-up. Third position went to the Fireball of David Houghton and John Symonds.

The Fireball of Veronica and Ben Falat managed to halt the dominance of the RS400s in the Sallis Series but not far behind them were Richard Fryer and Carol Smalls. David Houghton and John Symonds again taking the third slot.

The RS400 Club Championship is evidence of the close racing within the fleet as there was a dead heat for first place and only a quarter of a point between third and forth position. Richard and Carol emerging as overall winners and Martin and Di  runners-up after counting discards. Third position went to Don and Marcia with Richard and Jenny in fourth.

The Thursday Evening trophy saw all top spots filled by single-handers, with the RS300 of Dick Roe overall winner and the Laser of Richard Brown was second. Only one point separated third and fourth spots with the RS600 of Mark Porter just pipping the Flash of Kate Dulieu.

The final presentation of the evening went to Sid Jeffries who, at a youthful 87 years of age, has finally decided to hang up his wetsuit, perhaps demonstrating that we can enjoy the delights of the sport well after 'normal' retirement age.  Sid has kept the results in order for the  past years and has been a regular on the water sailing several different types of Laser dinghy.  The Club presented Sid with a radio-controlled Laser so that he can continue his sailing activities but remain warm and dry in the process.
